reflection on midterm 2026
A Reflection on the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Taking Over Both Houses of Congress Last Night
A few thoughts on the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) taking over both houses of the U.S. Congress last night.
After praying and carefully discerning the situation, I have come to see that the only underlying cause is the moral decay of humanity. The root of this moral decline goes back to the Fall of Adam and Eve. After they sinned, humanity lost sanctifying grace and developed an inclination to choose sin (the demonic) rather than God (the divine).
The unfortunate reality is that sin is always more tempting than virtue. Just think about it: all Seven Capital Sins are attractive and easy steps to take because they lead us downhill, taking us farther and farther away from God and toward evil. Greed is easier than generosity; boasting is easier than humility; overindulgence in food and drink is easier than self-restraint; laziness is easier than diligence, and so on.
By contrast, the steps that lead us to true blessedness (holiness) are uphill climbs that seem incredibly difficult. They require tremendous effort and sacrifice. Just read the Eight Beatitudes and see for yourself. They are all about things that are difficult to practice: being persecuted for the sake of righteousness, being pure in heart, being poor in spirit, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, and so on.
And so, people choose what is easy and abandon what is difficult. They choose greed and injustice over generosity and fairness. They convince themselves that taking what belongs to others for their own use is justified because they are more deserving of sympathy. If no law permits such behavior, then they will storm Congress to make new laws or twist existing ones—as long as they BENEFIT from it.
This is precisely the path that led to the rise of Communism in the early twentieth century. By the time those who had embraced Communism realized they had made the wrong choice, it was already too late. Communist regimes became so cruel and oppressive that no one could overthrow them, leaving people trapped in totalitarian societies, as is still the case in many countries across Asia and Africa, including Vietnam.
But God does not surrender.
It is precisely in the depths of deprivation and suffering, at the bottom of societies built on deception and totalitarian control, that people begin to realize that they cannot truly live without God. They come to understand that using civil laws to distort God's laws only brings misery upon themselves.
And so, churches begin to fill up again. Rosary prayers and other devotional gatherings once more attract growing numbers of people.
Thanks be to God! Indeed, Christ has conquered the world! 🙏🏻
