Zen Buddhism (with Mahakasyapa as its founder): Originating from Shakyamuni Buddha, who transmitted this Dharma or this Method to Mahakasyapa, and subsequently passed down through 28 Indian patriarchs before reaching China. From then on, Zen Buddhism emphasizes sudden enlightenment (zh. 頓悟), meaning "instant enlightenment," on the path of practice, understanding one's own pure mind (similar to the training methods of Kung Fu, martial arts, and other arts).

Zen Buddhism places little or no emphasis on Dharma or any form of language in the world today, but rather relies on direct experience from reality, with the goal of enabling practitioners to directly perceive the absolute true nature of humanity and all things, as well as recognize the "emptiness" of the entire universe and attain enlightenment, like the Buddha. In a Dharma assembly, the Buddha silently held up a lotus flower, and only Mahakasyapa, a great disciple, smiled, understanding the meaning (see *Holding the Lotus Flower with a Smile*). The Buddha Shakyamuni confirmed Mahakasyapa as the founder of Indian Zen Buddhism.

To counter the tendency of "Tantric Buddhism," which often meticulously analyzes and deeply understands Buddhist doctrines, Zen masters named their school "Zen" to emphasize the importance of realizing "Buddha-nature" through practice and realization. While Tantric Buddhism venerates sexuality, Zen Buddhism rejects it. Therefore, Zen Buddhism rejects and discards cumbersome rituals and endless, difficult-to-understand treatises, but does not deny their content and essence. Zen Buddhism is a unique synthesis of two fundamental doctrines of Indian Mahayana Buddhism: the Madhyamaka (zh. 中觀, sa. mādhyamika) and the Vijñānavāda (zh. 唯識, sa. vijñānavādin).
