mat dat de nang len ta
ta khong mong cho thuc day lan nua
de cam nhan trong vung dat am uot
co the ta co kha nang hoat dong tro lai,
xin nho rang sau mot thoi gian qua lau,
lam the nao de no ra lan nua
trong lan anh sang lanh leo
cua mot ngay dau xuan—

so hai, u, nhung bay gio ta dang o cung cac nguoi
khoc than, u, niem vui mao hiem

trong lan gio tuoi tan cua troi dat moi.

Do you know what I was, how I lived? You know
what despair is; then
winter should have meaning for you.

I did not expect to survive,
earth suppressing me. I didn't expect
to waken again, to feel
in damp earth my body
able to respond again, remembering
after so long how to open again
in the cold light
of earliest spring—

afraid, yes, but among you again
crying yes risk joy

in the raw wind of the new world.
